Baldur's Gate 3 Player Finds New Fail-Safes To Stop You Losing The Netherstones (2024)

Baldur’s Gate 3 has plenty of crucial items for you to keep track of, but the Netherstones are without a doubt something you don't want to lose, as you need to collect all three of them from Ketheric, Orin, and Gortash to beat the game. Despite being extremely important, Baldur's Gate 3 allows you to drop these stones wherever you like, and you're almost always rightfully scolded by The Emperor for dropping them willy-nilly.

Should you somehow drop one and lose it forever, your stupidity is often greeted with a game over cutscene of the Elder Brain turning your character into a Mind Flayer. There are rare occasions on which The Emperor will pop your Netherstones into your camp's chest for you, such as if you drop them in the Githyanki stronghold and enter Act 3, so we know the game does have a few fail-safes to ensure it's beatable.

Just how many fail-safes there are is still unknown, but a YouTuber called Proxy Gate Tactician recently set out to try and find as many as they could by dropping the Netherstones in locations you can't return to once you've finished your shenanigans. The Iron Throne in Act 3 is one such location, and upon dropping the stones and leaving the area, The Emperor gives you a good telling off and tells you to scour the nearest coast to see if they've washed up.

If you visit the spot on the coast indicated by the new marker, you're greeted by a bunch of Sahuagin, which is an encounter that happens the first time you visit that area, no matter the circ*mstances. However, as Proxy Gate Tactician shows us, if you dropped your Netherstones in the Iron Throne before the fight, one of the Sahuagin will be holding them.

Not content to leave it there, Proxy Gate Tactician wanted to find out what would happen if you killed these Sahuagin before dropping your stones in the Iron Throne, and it turns out Larian planned for that too. Visit the same location, and you'll find a merchant called Old Troutman who is selling each Netherstone you dropped for three gold each. Something tells me he had no idea what he had his hands on.

Proxy Gate Tactician then murders poor Old Troutman to see what would happen if both he and the Sahuagin were dead before you drop your stones in the Iron Throne, and somehow Larian accounted for that too. Returning to the same shore, you'll be able to find a bloated fish that has washed up that swallowed all of your Netherstones, making you the most fortunate adventurer in all the Forgotten Realms.

It's an incredible amount of dedication from Larian to ensure every possibility is accounted for, no matter how unlikely, and Proxy Gate Tactician's video reveals a couple more interesting failsafes the devs added to ensure you keep your Netherstones.
